Essential Tasks You Must Complete After Installing WordPress

So you’ve installed WordPress on your Site. Congrats! You have chosen the World’s most awesome Platform for Blogging. But your task is not finished yet. You have to make it more user and SEO Friendly.


Essential Things After Installing WordPress

01. Delete default posts & pages

To help you get to grips with the WordPress way of doing things, a new installation will include some sample content.


This sample content should be removed once you are ready to start building your site and it can be found at the following locations:

  • ‘Hello World’ post
  • ‘Sample Page’ page
  • ‘Mr. WordPress’ comment
  • ‘Hello Dolly’ plugin

Simply delete the above to remove all the sample content from your new WordPress site.

02. Active Akismet

If you are new in WordPress then you may not be aware of Comment and Trackback spamming. But it could be a big problem of your blog if you don’t activate Akismet Plugin.

Akismet is a pre-installed WordPress plugin that helps you to get rid of spams. All you need to do is activating the plugin and enter the API key.

Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins > Active Akismet Plugin.

03. Optimize Permalink

Permalink is the Permanent Link of your blog posts.


By default WordPress Permalink is But it doesn’t make any sense to the Search Engine. This permalink is short but not SEO friendly. So it’s better to use a custom permalink.

In RoadToBlogging I am using /%postname%/ . That means my URL looks like

To change your Permalink go to Setting > Permalinks. Checked the Custom Structure and type /%postname%/ to the box. Click on Save Changes.

04. Select time zone. time format and date format

Changing default time zone is most important for enhancing blog security. It also helpful when you schedule any post. You can change the time zone to local time.

Go to settings > general > timezone, date format and time format.


In general settings, you should change your website name and tagline. Enter your email to get notifications of your website. There is no major difference between www or non-www website URL and you can change frequently.

05. Disable User Registration

If you want to create WordPress site which allows guest posting then you can skip this step.But if you are a sole writer and don’t need people to register.Then you should follow these settings to stop spam registration.


Go to Settings>General and Un-check “Anyone can Register field”.

06. Install a social sharing plugin

While good SEO will deliver visitors to your site from the search engines, making your content as easily shareable as possible can bring in a large amount of traffic from the social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter

07. Install a caching plugin

A caching plugin will improve the time it takes to your WordPress site and its content to load. The two main benefits of having a fast loading site are that slow websites put visitors off, and it can also have a negative effect on your site’s ranking in the search engines.

By installing a free caching plugin such as W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache, and with a little effort you can go a long way to improving your site’s page speed times for a more enjoyable user experience.

08. Allowing Comments or Not

You have to decide that you want Comment on your blog post or Not. By default WordPress lets your reader comment on your post. But you can change it if you want. I think this is a no-brainer not to let your reader comments on posts.


If you want to change go to Setting > Discussion > Default article settings. Uncheck Allow people to post comments on new articles.

09. Change default admin account

If you have chosen a custom username and password while installing WordPress then this section is not for you. but if your username is “admin” then you have to choose a custom username to prevent dangerous attacks on the blog. Remember one thing that you should choose mix characters password (Strong password) like @#dhf2#3jpg.

Go to users > add new then give it admin rights and delete default user(username = admin).

10. Update Ping list

Whenever you publish a new post, WordPress sends the ping to all ping services. Ping Services help you to get your blog post to the maximum Search Engines. It is also helpful for quick indexing.


By default, WordPress offers only one Ping service. But you can update it with more ping services. Just go to Dashboard > Setting > Writing.
